Hello! And happy Friday! Today, I’m breaking out of my traditional Some Pretty Picks post format and taking a moment for a Friday intro. Analytics tells me my audience is growing and I love the thought of having new friends following along on my online journey. But you might not know me or my blogging story that well. I try to keep my writing personal and personable but some context is always valuable.
Some Pretty Thing became a love of mine almost the instant my boyfriend set up my WordPress website. I always knew I was a writer – I wrote 3 novels in high school – but the pressure of being a copywriter, journalist, or even a novelist is very overwhelming. But let’s back it up even more. The summer between my sophomore and junior year of college I interned with my dad in the PR department of a national open-wheel racing sanctioning body. It was a great experience and a fantastic internship but when I wasn’t busy pitching stories, cold calling news outlets, or traveling with the teams, I would spend my time devouring the only fashion blog I knew of at the time – This is Glamorous. I hate to say it, but there were some days where reading that online publication was the only thing I looked forward to – it was right up my street.
At a much younger age, couture designs and high fashion intrigued me. I spent hours pouring over magazine photos from ads in Conde Nast publications. At one point I delicately cut out the logos of high-fashion brands – Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Givenchy and glued them to a small trunk I used to store my American Girl doll clothes in.
Fast forward, to fresh out of grad school. My boyfriend – now fiance, almost husband, and serial hobbiest – warned me that if I didn’t find a hobby he was going to find one for me. I was working a full-time job but the evenings felt like wasted time. I had been following some of the fashion blogger greats – Gal Meets Glam, Something Navy, Margo and Me, etc. – for a while and thought if they can do it why can’t I?
So – timidly – I asked for some help. First the name, that came easy, then the setup, again easy. The content was planned, photos were shot and the first Some Pretty Thing blog post made its way out into the world. I have never looked back. Sure, this blog may not make me millions. It may not have national significance or a worldwide impact. I may never reach over 2,221 followers on Instagram. And you know what? It really doesn’t matter.
I want to share my take on beauty and my perspective on the world of fashion with you all because I love it, not because it makes me boatloads of money. I love this space. I love the people that take the time to read my words and look at my photos. So thank you for reading, thank you for coming back, thank you for your comments, thoughts, perspective, and encouragement. I promise that as long as I’m still in love with this platform I’ll keep inspiring you to follow your dreams too.
