Faux Fur and Suede: Shopping Secondhand

January 15, 2018

Outfit: Coat (c/o) | Jeans (c/o) | Boots

One of the many reasons I love winter is the ability to change up your look with just one subtle switch of clothing. You can glam up a look by adding a silk pashmina or create cozy vibes with a chunky knit beanie. Add a faux fur and suede coat with jeans and moto boots and you’re suddenly pulling off the tailored-retro look everyone’s been channeling this season. But with the number of options available, it’s often overwhelming to create the right look – especially if you’re not in a position to empty your bank account on every coat style, distressed denim item, and trending accessory on the market.

So how do you achieve those chic winter looks without breaking the bank? Consignment stores and resale shops – both local and online – is your golden ticket! Of course, there are the obvious options like Goodwill and Salvation Army – and you can often find treasures there too – but even when it comes to shopping resale and vintage I like to think outside the box.

I’ve found three great options for online shopping:  Swap, threadUP, and Poshmark. They’re easy and affordable ways to buy specific pieces for your wardrobe that you might be missing with fantastic websites that are easy to navigate and find what you’re looking for.

Not totally sold on buying used items online? Do some research and find your local thrift stores. Here in Greenville, I frequent ones like Miracle Hill, Clothes Mentor, and Safe Harbor. Not only do I often find vintage items for a fraction of the cost but I’m also shopping local and helping out non-profits with my purchase.

Of course, shopping secondhand is not for everyone – but there are great options out there if you’re looking to add to your winter wardrobe but are on a strict budget! Let’s not get so caught up in the dazzle of The New that we forget to shop our own closets or someone else’s before we drop top dollars on products that we may wear once.

So, what do you think? How do you add to your winter wardrobe without breaking the bank?
