DIY Christmas Decor

November 29, 2017

There’s nothing I love more than decorating for Christmas. No matter where I’ve lived – from dorm rooms to the Loft – the addition of Christmas decor makes any space so beautiful. But no matter how many sales Hobby Lobby promotes, Christmas decor can get very expensive very quickly – especially if you’re just starting out and need to fill a home with Christmas cheer! I’ve found the best remedy for sticking to a decor budget is to create some DIY decor projects.

This year I made two fresh pine wreaths and a festive swag to hang around the loft. I will be the first to admit I’m not a super crafty individual, but arranging pine boughs on grapevine wreaths is easy, quick, and right up my alley.

The instructions are simple and the ingredients even more so. All you need is a grapevine wreath, some fresh pine boughs (my mom and I foraged these from the pine tree in the backyard) and florist wire. Cut the branches about 6-8 inches long and arrange them on the wreath forms attaching the boughs securely with the florist wire. Hang them up with ribbon, leather, linen, twine, or whatever matches your decor. And enjoy the scent of fresh pine all season long.

The swag is just as simple: grab a thick stick from nature and choose from your selection of fresh cut pine for varying lengths. Gather them together in the center of the stick and secure them with a chord, a napkin ring, really anything you have lying around. Add some additional greenery (I’ve used dried eucalyptus) and hang it on the wall.

Like I said, I’m all about those easy little crafts so if I can do this, I guarantee you can too!

Comment with your favorite DIY Christmas decor ideas. I’d love to hear your ideas.

Your photos are fabulous. I’m definitely going to be making my own wreath this year – thanks for sharing how you made yours.

You made it sound so easy, I think I might try it! Last year was our first year with a fake tree, so we miss that fresh scent of Christmas. I like that there isn’t a lot to it, I tend to get overwhelmed at the store trying to find everything I need for a project.

That Wreath is gorgeous! I’ve never had a REAL one . Are there any major differences?

Not too many differences. I just spritz the branches with some water every week or so to keep them fresh!

I like how your version incorporates fresh branches. I love the smell of pine, which is part of the reason why I’ve always bought our wreaths.
