10 Ways to Prepare For Fall

October 5, 2016
what to wear when you have nothing to wear

Fall is officially here, which means that not only is it time to transition from chiffon and linen in your wardrobe, it’s also time to do a little tidying up around your life. From cleaning your windowsills to organizing your junk drawer, the cooler temps and shorter days are perfect for re-organzation.

Below are 10 things that I’ve found particularly refreshing when it comes to fall – both of your home and your mental space!

1. Buy new candles

Is it just me or does the smell of cinnamon and pumpkin candles make anyone almost giddy? Now is the time of year where the weather is perfect, the sun sets a little earlier, and the soft glow of candles makes for the coziest environment. Some of my favorite scents? Pumpkin, vanilla, amber, and cinnamon.

2. Wash your bedding

Gone are the days of summer sheets. I love to wash my heavier transition blankets before I even put them on my bed for the chilly evenings, and now is a great time to get the process started. I don’t have a washer or dryer in my apartment so I envy the people who can just ‘throw in a load’ whenever they like!

3. Switch out summer clothing for fall clothing

Probably a no-brainer, but this is a great exercise to get you in the autumnal mood. I always re-discover old favorites and instantly come up with great new summer-fall transition outfits with the inclusion of my chunky knits and blanket scarves into my visible wardrobe.

4. Open up the windows

Your home has been thoroughly dosed by dry, ‘artificial air’ by this point in the year, so even if it’s still a little muggy go ahead and open up those windows! The fresh breezes will clear all the stale air out of your space and you’ll save a fortune by not running the A/C!

5. Clean your car and your home

I may get the most excited about this chore in the fall. There’s something instantly satisfying about cleaning windowsills and vacuuming around baseboards. No? Just me? Perhaps, but I love it all the same. Go ahead, take some time on a Thursday evening when there’s nothing good to watch anyway and do one really good cleaning home clean. Clean space, clean mind!

6. Change some key decor

Mmmmm who else goes overboard with fall/winter decor? (raises hands!) If you don’t have the budget for it, or the storage, no need to fret! Simple change out a few key items in your home (like a tablecloth, centerpiece, some wall art) and watch as your space gets transformed into a beautiful autumnal scene. Just a few small pumpkins will work wonders.

7. Polish your leather boots

I always forget about this, and when I go to wear my boots for the season I never want to take the time to clean them up. Be proactive this year and take care of your nice footwear before you have to switch an outfit at the last minute!

8. Make a point to exercise before eating dinner

The sun is starting to set earlier and earlier now. Soon it will be 6 o’ clock and completely dark! I always forget how fast the sun sets in the early fall and when I push off working out I’m never motivated. Get off work and push yourself to get a mile in before you cozy up for the evening indoors.

9. Get outside

Fall is a beautiful time of the year to explore areas of your city you haven’t before! Make a point to take some Saturday adventures to nearby places and see the colors of fall.

10. Make a fall hobby list

This will come in handy when you’re faced with a dull evening at home. Make a list of the hobbies you’d like to try and set your mind to accomplish at least one every month!

So that’s your to-do list for the fall! Not too bad, right? Let me know how you all get ready for the cooler weather!
